Boulder Kyudojo
Boulder County
Kyudo, meaning the "way of the bow," is a Japanese archery style with traditions in philosophical ideals. A Kyudojo is a practice hall where students cultivate Kyudo. The Boulder Kyudojo was constructed in 1983 by Kanjuro Shibata XX and is the first known Kyudojo in the United States.
The Kyudojo allowed the introduction of Japanese traditions and philosophical approaches to Colorado and the United States. Kyudo is a form of archer rooted in Zen Buddhism that focuses on bettering the self through meditative practice instead of athletic technique. Kanjuro Shibata XX was the twentieth in the Shibata lineage. This lineage has served as the Sensei (meaning teacher of Japanese arts) of Kyudo in Japan and as the official bow maker for the Japanese Emperor. Furthermore, the practice hall for Kyudo, known as the Kyudojo, is designed using Japanese stylistic elements.
