Eighth Street Baptist Church
Pueblo County
Home to one of Pueblo's oldest Black congregations and the site of women's suffrage activities, the Eighth Street Baptist Church was first built at the southwest corner of W. 8th and Elizabeth streets in 1891 and then substantially expanded in 1908.
The Eighth Street Baptist Church is significant in the areas of Black Ethnic Heritage and Social History for its extended association with one of Pueblo's oldest Black church congregations where social events, programs, and activities were held in the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries to support and uplift the local Black community. It is further significant in the areas of Women's History as a rare, identified example in Pueblo of how the 1893 campaign for women's suffrage in Colorado included Black women.
